Swing and a Miss!

…So among the races to be decided next week is my local mayor’s office. We’ve had a Democratic mayor and a Democratic town council forever, and I have to admit that I’m not too satisfied with ‘em. They have been, at a very basic level, inept. The incumbent mayor is retiring, and one of the council members is running on the Demo ticket. The Republicans have put up a former council member, a 33-year-old woman with no particular qualifications that I can think of except that she came out of the same high school advanced poli-sci program that I did. That’s my guess, anyway–I’d point you to some information about her, but her web presence is almost non-existent. For the past couple of months, I’ve been facing this dilemma: I don’t really want to cast my vote for the same ol’ twits, but at this point I have a hard time voting for anyone who identifies themselves with the Republicans at any level. And yet she is a member of the Sierra Club.

I had almost made up my mind to go for it and give her a chance when I picked up the op-ed page of my local paper and read a letter to the editor from a reader endorsing the Republican. “I met her,” the writer said. “She’s wonderful. I told her that I think of her as ‘Little Sarah Palin.’”

A wave of revulsion swept through me. “Bleep that,” I said, knowing I would be voting Democratic straight down the line. They’ll never know how close they came.
