Whenever I go out to a store and the parking lot is sufficiently full that you have to circle a few times to find a space and/or the store itself actually seems to be crowded with shoppers, I have a little ironic joke I tell myself (and sometimes whoever is with me). “The economy,” I say, “is BACK!”

I had cause to say that to myself today, but as I did I realized that I had been saying it for about eight years–at which point it seemed neither funny nor ironic, but sour and depressing.
