When It Snows, Where Do the Ducks Go?

I don’t know what the new technology areas that stimulate re-employment will be–stem cells, CO2 capture, hover cars–but as we well know, some folks are just not going to get new jobs. Their work is gone forever.

This has been frequently observed on the part of automobile factory workers, but I’m more concerned with all the folks employed by dealerships that are about to go away. Where did those people come from, and what line of work are they going to go into? I don’t know about you, but I’ve never emerged from a dealership thinking, “Boy, the guy who tried to stiff-arm me into taking an undercarriage treatment and a security number etching sure is miscast in this line of work. He’d be better used running humanitarian relief efforts in some poor, tsunami-blasted country, or negotiating arms reduction agreements at the UN.” Car salesman aren’t evil, exactly, just legal con men. I don’t know what you do with that kind of talent. They can’t all go into politics.

Mr. Goldman, I think you do something of a disservice to the coming waves of the suddenly destitute by focusing on those who “deserve it” or who have nobody but themselves to blame (due to career choice, educational history, or general fecklessness). This issue is far, far bigger than your cheeky Schadenfreude would imply (as I’m sure you know).
