Welcome back, Steven!

I heard about Kyl's threatened filibuster if the nominee is someone who takes suffering and empathy into account. The horror! Instead, we must have strict constructionists, who divine intent from the documents that were written 200 years ago, when everyone of importance put into words on paper their final thoughts on everything contained within the Constitution. Of course, its a good thing we have all of those documents too, and no one has any trouble understanding them . . .

I look forward to seeing if Kyl and Sessions can actually talk all of their colleagues - particularly both Snowe and Collins, AFAIK, the only moderates left - into it. Should be fun.

Additional "surprise" Justices: Blackmun (appointed by Nixon, but slowly drifted left over a long career), White (appointed by Kennedy, a conservative-but-not-in-a-Southern-way Democrat who ended up a pretty firm center-right vote over his time on the Court), and Brennan (like Warren, a perpetual thorn in Republicans' side after Eisenhower appointed him).
